I have been teaching math for 10 years and read this book for a graduate class. It is such a great resource for new and veteran teachers! It offers realistic ways for teachers to move away from the "traditional" way most teach with direct instruction and move toward student-centered problem solving strategies. I'm hoping the cost of it goes down so it is more accessible for people because it is changing the way I teach!

This book is an amazing resource for an elementary school teachers. I had the pleasure of taking a college course taught by one of the writers, using this book. This is truly one of the most valuable college textbooks I have used. I imagine that I will be referencing it several hundred times in my career. It's great! One of the best features is that each chapter has a list of children's literature that goes with the concept taught! So helpful!

I'm a math tutor looking for ideas on how to help weaker students "get" math. The book is very comprehensive and I do not have time to read it from cover to cover. So far I've only read the fractions, measurements and early number sense chapters and got many great ideas from those alone, which make this book worth the hefty price.I agree with most of the principles and ideas the authors put forth so far, but personally feel mastering the facts is more important than the authors say it is.I will update this review as I read more do the book.

This book is an amazing, practical resource for anyone teaching elementary and middle school mathematics. Van de Walle's clear, concise explanations of mathematical practices and procedures are easy to follow and implement. His practical examples and follow up activities are superb.

THANKS SO MUCH. tHIS BOOK HAS BEEN REALLY HELPFUL FOR MY TEACHING. iT'S DEFINITELY A RESOURCE BOOK TO KEEP AND LOOK BACK TO WHEN YOU ARE TEACHING A CERTAIN SUBJECT LIKE DIVISION. IT ANTICIPATES PROBLEMS STUDENTS WILL HAVE AND GIVES GREAT ADVICE. THANKS

I can't say that I loved it, because who really loves a college textbook? However, as far as textbooks go, this one is really well laid out. The best part is all of the examples, and the direct quotations of interactions between students and teachers. There is SO much content in here that it is hard to absorb it all. It helped me get a good understanding of how students think in the math classroom, and how important it is to give them a foundational understanding of mathematics rather than have them memorize facts and formulas. I would like a few more pictures, resources, and activities (maybe in a back index?), because the activities that are there are embedded in the text. It would be nice if they could all be seen together in one place.

This is an excellent book for elementary math teacher, It's full of activity ideas, ways to identify student thinking and reasoning. It provides structure for lesson creation including before, during, and after.

This textbook had a lot of ideas that can be used for mathematics. Wish it had more examples instead of just telling about the situation or problem at hand. I enjoyed all of the individual boxes of ideas instead of straight reading, will be easy to reference once I need ideas for teaching.
