Chemo To The Rescue: A Children's Book About Leukemia

When my daughter, Caitlin, was diagnosed with leukemia, she was five years old. Our life changed dramatically, and it was hard to answer the questions she had about her illness and explain why she must go through chemotherapy for such a long time. At one point she began to rebel against the treatment, not understanding that the medicine that was making her feel bad was actually saving her life. Creating this book with Caitlin helped her to come to terms with her illness and accept the treatment. It gave her the power she needed to fight and be strong during the difficult times. She is now eight years old and fully recovered. She looks back on this time as challenging, yet with pride. We hope that our book will encourage other children in the same way by providing a positive outlook to chemotherapy and hospital life. I am a kindergarten teacher, and this year I have a student with Leukemia in my class. I purchased this book to help my class understand what our "friend" was going through, and to help them understand why our class had to have such a strong importance on hand-washing, and keeping our favorite student healthy! This was a great book that the kids really enjoyed!

When Charlie was first in the hospital we received so much material to help us along the journey. One of those items was the Chemo to the Rescue book as seen above. At the time, I considered the book mature reading to a 3 year old. But a few weeks ago Charlie picked it off the shelf and Chad and I began reading it to him every night. The story talks about a little boy named Kyle and what he goes through to battle Leukemia. It shows the hospital visits, port accesses, and chemo as superhero type things.Charlie had his monthly chemo on Tuesday this week. His port accesses lately haven't been the best since the traumatic event back in August. But we read the Chemo to the rescue book almost every night for a week prior and when we practiced at home he was excellent. Sally went to access his port in clinic he didn't even cry this time!!! That was a SERIOUS milestone. He whimpered and fussed a bit when it was removed, but this month was the best port access EVER in over a year and a half. Thank you Chemo to the Rescue book. I firmly believe this story helped Charlie to accept what was happening and work through his issues.

Wonderful book! Wasn't sure how this would be accepted by my recently diagnosed 6 yr old grandson as before his diagnosis, he was fearful of blood, shots, needles & even his Auntie's vintage Playmobil hospital/operating room playset. Now all that has changed. He helps clean out his port, isn't fearful of blood & now loves playing with that Playmobil set. I wish we didn't have a need for such a book but it was well-received & this 6 yr-old reader read it by himself. It was nice to see him relate to the child in the book…And to think of chemo as a super-hero is a smart way to cover this awful subject.

My daughter and Caitlin became best buddies in Kindergarten when we moved to Sweden. Mary (her mom) is one of the persons I admire so much. We have been around during the last 2 years of treatments and now years later, miles apart, we are still best friends. This book is one of the best work I have ever seen from a team of mother-daughter-family-friends. They planned to share their painful worrying/private/intimate moments with the kindest thoughts: their experience that can guide others to cope with such a `monster' as leukemia. Accurate words and amazing pictures. Thank you!We feel privileged to have Caitlin, Mary and the rest of the gang in our life.

This book is very helpful for my daughter to understand what Leukemia is, and what all the yucky medicines and doctor's visits are for. After I told her it was written by another kid, she said "I didn't know I wasn't the only one!" Thank you for making this book.

I am so thankful for this book. My 4 year old son was just diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in July 2013. I found this book that day so I could start him off on to why he had to stay in the hospital, why his blood was sick and why he needs the chemotherapy. We've read it at almost all of his procedures just to reinforce the reason why he is having all the pokes and medicine.

My son, Ben, was diagnosed with leukemia close to 6 years old. We received other books but by far, this was the most child friendly AND informative book we bought/received. I actually read it myself to better understand the disease and how it works in a child's system. My child enjoys reading it and it's great for educating family, both adults and siblings. It doesn't make cancer scary, explains the disease in clear and concise terms, and talks about the child as if they are a warrior and should be proud of themselves for all they go through. This is the exactly the message we tell our son and this book helps to reinforce how brave and strong he is. Thank you so much to the authors for a wonderful book. It is also a great addition to any child's classroom so that the teacher can read to class and help the other children understand why he has no hair, why everyone should wash their hands, why he/she is out of school so much and most importantly - not to be afraid of the child.

My 5-year-old daughter has Leukemia & she LOVES this book!! It states the facts about Leukemia in a way that kids can easily understand. Also, it helped my other daughter understand what her sister is going thru. It goes into what a child may feel everyday living with Chemo, why Chemo is necessary, getting blood check-ups, X-rays, going to the hospital & more! My favorite line is at the end, where it says "One day I will look back on this time & think: WOW! I did it! And that is something to be proud of."I cried the first time I read it because it is so positive & empowering to kids ... I just can't say enough good things about this. In fact, I am purchasing 2 more: one for the Oncology waiting room & one for my daughter's Kindergarten class.
