A wonderful book with a message for everyone, the patient, family, friends and caregivers. The author tells her story from one of hope with a healthy dose of reality. You will learn the importance of love, compassion and a caring medical team. Everyone plays a role, from the closest family member to the total strangers on her Caring Bridge site. For me, the greatest message was that if you think you can't make a difference for someone going though such a terrible battle, think again. Even the briefest message of compassion and love will help. Also, the illustrations are beautiful and somehow perfectly capture what it's like to fight this battle. - A fellow cancer survivor
I read My Beautiful Leukemia, by Jan Lucas-Grimm, in one sitting - I couldn't put it down. The reader gets a glimpse into the cancer journey from a variety of perspectives. The medical community is drawn as more than just a provider of services, but also as an ally in the work. Friends and family are critical supports, but are also impacted by Lucas-Grimm's illness. And Lucas-Grimm herself is introspective about this hard road she has to navigate, but never self-absorbed. A thoughtful yet practical reflection of a life-changing event and how this woman chooses to meet it.
INSPIRING! Jan's story brought me complete inspiration. After reading the book, I will never look at the simple things in life the same... Drinking a cup of coffee, digging my hands in the dirt to plant a flower, or just eating a yummy meal. You root for her and can't help but examine your own life and realize how precious it can be.
