In You Can Beat Lung Cancer: Using Alternative/Integrative Interventions author Carl O. Helvie has a terrible story to tell, and he tells it well. According to him, there are cancer cures to be had, but knowledge of them is kept from the public by the FDA and greedy, money hungry pharmaceutical companies, with government and drug companies discouraging physicians from using successful natural treatments because there is so much money involved. Helvie informs us that if the public were told of the existence of successful alternative cancer cures, the multi-billion dollar structure would crumble. Thus, the status quo is perpetuated. If his story is true, and Helvie himself is credible proof of it, such companies are criminals and guilty of nothing short of murder. We learn that virtually all the really good cures for cancer are outside of mainstream medicine and are labeled alternative. As a result, the average patient rarely hears about them., and many die unnecessarily. The book is clearly written, concise, original, and surprisingly enough for a book with this title, occasionally moving. Above all, it is extraordinary because it is written by a former victim of the big C who informs his readers that he was a sufferer from lung cancer who was given six months to live. He cured himself with alternate methods of treatment and thirty-eight years after his morbid diagnosis is still alive and in excellent health. The author teaches us how he dealt with life's most painful tribulations and faced our most frightening demons with courage. For what is the most terrifying ring of hell for each of us, the human suffering we fear the most but cancer itself? It is interesting that "Ayni," the name of the publisher, "is a Quechua word meaning "reciprocity.- sharing, giving and receiving.
