Just got these cards and they are great for rapid reviewing...like most flashcards. But I wanted to give a heads up that box that holds the cards is very sturdy but the cards themselves are equivalent to my printer paper...super thin and flimsy. I have the Lange Biochemistry and Genetics Flash Cards 2/E (LANGE FlashCards)and they are printed on heavy duty stock cards and I use them a lot with no wear/tear at all. These are gonna get worn out/folded/ripped pretty quickly. It would have been better for me to have gotten these on my kindle instead or maybe to have purchased and older edition. Hope this helps anyone contemplating on purchasing these and G'luck on your exams!
I noticed that the cards are on the same quality of paper. Thin but managable, not thick or laminated. They have added some color so its not as boring to look at. (nothing compared to the Lippincott's Microcards: Microbiology Flash Cards by Sanjiv Harpavat and Sahar Nissim, Third Edition The color helps a tiny bit. The cards have increased from 189 to 230. I havent gone through all of them yet to see what is new. The box is now a flip top which is helpful in case you lose lids (not me)Only problems I've noticed so far is that Group 6 and Group 7 ( Hematological Agents and Endocrine/Metabolic Agents) have the colored 6 or 7 Tab in the same location. kinda sucks when trying to separate the cards out. Not sure if this is with everyone or just my cards that have this issue.I will attach a picture that shows the differnce between group 7 header card. They have added more drugs onto each category ( adding ezetimbe, niacin, danazol, anastrozole, tamifloxin clomiphene, levothyroxine.)
I just started using this card for my USMLE Step 1 review. I don't know how many errors they may have, but on the anti-depressants section they misclassified some drugs (bupropion and trazodone as TCAs, & duloxetine as a SRRI) and thus have their mechanisms wrong... I really could care less about the quality of the material on which they're printed, but messing up the content really makes me doubt the whole product.
As another reviewer mentioned, there are errors of drug classification I can understand a few grammatical mistakes, but the content is even correct in the Pharmacology book by Lange. They also seem to lack some of the newer drugs that came out even a couple years before their recent publish date, and include some drugs that are no longer on the market in the USA (Encainide and Tocainide were taken off the market). Totally unacceptable.
There are occasional errors. For instance, in one question stem they classify "benign prostatic hyperplasia" as "benign prostatic hypertrophy". That's a big problem and certainly could cost you a point on step 1, and to be honest there are 4-5 mistakes like this throughout the cards. However, we are talking about almost 250 flashcards here with a ton of information. The pathological and "real life" tie ins are absolutely necessary for retaining the information and I wouldn't understand pharmacology nearly as well without these cards. To me, the vignettes are well written and they force you to comprehend why/when/how a drug is used. Without the occasional errors, this would be a 5 star product. My suggestion: the first time you go through the cards, have a First Aid handy to verify the content. If you are one of those people who demands a flawless product, maybe these cards aren't for you. But- I've found errors in almost all the review sources for step 1 and these cards are no different. Pathoma, First Aid, DIT- sorry, but they've all got em! Overall, these cards are great.
I've been using these for my pharmacology class, and they're really great. so far we've covered anti-hypertensives, anti-asthmatics, heart failure, and dyslipidemia drugs, and these have really helped. These are a quick way to study, they have down the important facts and are not laminated, so if there's something missing I can just write it in and make them really personalized. I'm glad i got these, i only wish i'd gotten them sooner.
These cards are great. I just had a exam which had a lot of pharm. These cards helped tremendously. They provide a clinical vignette which is very important for the boards and for class exams. On the back of the card, there is a summary of side effects, clinical uses, and more. Certain key features of each drug are bolded which is extremely helpful. Everything I learned from my lecture powerpoints were summarized on these cards. The only downfall of this product is the flimsiness of the cards. They are paper thin and are not laminated. That's the only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. But ultimately what matters is the content of the cards and I can assure you that these are awesome. I recommend this to all other fellow medical students.
I bought these flashcards as part of USMLE Step 1 prep. They are a good summary of pharmacology containing (almost) all of the drugs and their indications, MoA's, adverse effects, etc you need to know. The cards themselves are sort of fragile and I wish they had been laminated. Each drug has a card with a a clinical vignette on one side and information on the other. There are also summary cards for each of the drug classes. I try to start with the vignette and explain as much as I can because just being able to guess what drug they are referring to is too easy.
