While this certainly should not be the only resource used to prepare for the CCS portion of the exam, it may be useful for some.I understand that this book may not be necessary for everyone who is preparing for Step 3 (especially current residents), but it may be useful to those who are looking to review the management protocols of the pathologies most commonly tested on CCS. I have found this book useful in that regard. It is set up very nicely and tells you what the ideal and optional management should be for each case.Best CCS-specific book I have found to date.Update: I passed Step 3 on the first attempt, with a CCS score that was well in the passing range. I am an IMG/FMG with no residency experience and used several sources (including this book) to prepare for the CCS. It was a nice compliment to the practice banks and was good for a quick nightly review of similar cases that I had practiced during the day.
I bought this book to supplement UW cases. I felt very confident going in to the exam even with very limited time to study. Going through these cases really helped my score.
As long as you go over this book, uWorld CCS, and uWorld questions you will be fine for your exam. This book is great because it covers all disciplines while others may focus on one field. It was instrumental in making CCS go by much easier. I definitely recommend it.
I am a psychiatry resident, which means I didn't spend a lot of time managing most of the conditions that are tested on CCS. This book has over 100 cases to review. It explains the likely diagnosis from just the presenting symptoms. It also tells you how to approach each case in order to maximize points in the CCS. I highly recommend this book, in conjunction with computer simulations (e.g. U-world), for preparing for the CCS. I used the Kindle version, which is great for reviewing cases when you are on call.
I haven't sat Step 3 yet so it's tough to define what would make ideal preparation for the CCS component, but I find this book OK so far. I'm not blown away in any fashion and haven't learned anything new. I think the utility of this text is possibly to become more acquainted with the mere idea of CCS, since obviously that's disparate to the MCQ assessments. My take is that UWorld + the USMLE website (where they allow us to view sample items for CCS) will likely be the mainstay of CCS prep.
This is the perfect book for the CCS exam. It is very inclusive, and gives you a format to approach these cases. It is a MUST HAVE for the exam. The CCS portion is a make it or break it portion of the test with 25-30% of the exam.
A good supplement to other CCS materials.
Great book!!!
