As far as one-big-book GRE guides go, The Princeton Review's "Cracking the GRE: Premium" is not bad. It will get you familiar with the test. Sound good? It shouldn't. If you want a competitive score, you'll need more than familiarity.Positives:The book is user-friendly, easy to navigate and use. The techniques for verbal reasoning questions are fine, and unlike Kaplan's books, it covers all critical reasoning question types. Math techniques are fine, and the major math concepts are covered. Essay advice is ok, too.Negatives:The book tries to cast the GRE as a silly test that only measures "your ability to take the GRE". But if you buy that, you might not prepare as rigorously as you need to: the GRE will test your vocab, reading comprehension, math knowledge, and writing ability, but also your ability to adapt, perform under pressure, and to THINK. Many of these abilities will be things you've developed or can develop further independently of traditional prep.The book doesn't cover concepts very deeply or offer technique options. Lower or higher scorers may be disadvantaged by this. Don't expect this book to get you to a high level in math, for example - you'll need a much more comprehensive review and more practice if you're rusty. The back cover of the book claims, "If it's on the test, it's in this book." I would disagree - not all math concepts are covered, and those that are often don't go deep enough to prepare you for harder GRE questions which test those concepts.Finally, the practice question realism is not great. Questions (like those from most prep companies) generally do not capture the real GRE's nuances and complexities very well.
