I used this book for TJ admissions review with my child. This is definitely not a starter book. It was great for review however, especially the verbal section since that seems to be inadequately covered in most other books. We also used PSAT books for practice, but the verbal required for Science and Tech focused high school admissions test is just not all there within the PSAT curriculum (Scrambled paragraphs anyone?). It has good explanations not only within the sections, but also for each of the test questions in the answer guide. My recommendation will be to copy the answer sheet (the one your child fills out) instead of using the one in the book. This allows for re-use of the tests, and for practice on the same material weeks/months later if needed (or with another child).
Got this along with the Kaplan prep book for my daughter. She worked through Kaplan with ease and was able to see her mistakes when she reviewed the answer key with Kaplan. Not so with Barron's. She found many of these math problems quite tricky and even the tutor I hired to help her with those problems found some of them quite tricky as well (tutor is former math teacher with Master's in Math).I think going over the trickier problems helped my daughter become better at solving easier problems and also better at attacking more difficult ones. I would say go through Kaplan (great test prep tips and sample tests), go through Barron's and then do the actual sample test that is online. Give your child enough time to really go through the books (wish I had started my kid earlier than the summer before the test) with sufficient time to review incorrect answers and he/she should be ok.Ps. My daughter got into Tech
My daughter applying for the SHSAT used this book to prep herself for the test and she was able to pass and get into her first school of choice, Stuyvesant High School. We did use this book along with some prep help from school. She worked her way through the practice problems in the book and spent much time on the sections she was least comfortable with. Then she did the practice tests in the back of the book, which were really close in difficulty to the actual SHSAT test. I would recommend this book as a good approach as well as some prep help, to get into the specialized high school of choice.
More difficult than the real test, which is a good thing if your student is high functioning enough to handle it. For other kids, it might stress them out and give them an unrealistic sense of what the real test will be like.
This book was very helpful in preparing for the TJ Admission Test, especially in getting acquainted with the format as they are nearly identical. The scrambled paragraphs were especially useful for the test. I used this book alone to prepare for TJ, and got admitted. However, I was already proficient in the material covered by this book. This book should be used more like a supplement after the material is learned, because it does not really "teach" the material, just reviews it. Overall, the MOST useful commercially available book to prepare for TJ and SHSAT!
This reviewer is challenging enough but I think it should include more practice exams. I think it prepares you well for the format of the test, but by no means should this be your ONLY review book, as I think not all topics were covered by the review tests.
I can't believe that no one mentioned that this preparation book is full of inaccuracies. So many answers that are provided for the model tests are simply wrong. My child was puzzled to say the least by so many errors that this book contained. It is a total waste of time to try matching the answers to the answer key as they make no sense, the published answers. I do not recommend this book to anyone. Only works if you are positive that you get the answer right and be able to disregard the published answer.
I used this book and it was awesome. I got into Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and Brooklyn Latin, (but I ended up going to private school).Okay, I did also have an awesome tutor from Central Park Tutors, who explained a lot of it to me, but, it was a good book. Here's the trick you have to do ALL the exercises in the book. You can't just read it. And its good to use extra old tests from the handbook as well. One prep book is not enough for sure! or it wasn't for me...good luck!
