Currently, I am in possession of four different brands of MAT test preparation materials. These include books published by Kaplan, Barron's, Mometrix and REA, which I am reviewing here. Simply put, REA is the worst of the bunch with way too many errors for a published text. Given that the book is for test preparation, the frequency of errors is quite extraordinary.The errors fit into the following categories (from most obvious to least):1) Answer choices completely missing (i.e. no "a" or "c")2) Explanations of answers referring to completely different words and/or subject matter (perhaps from previous editions?)3) Answers for basic math questions totally incorrect4) Sentences within an answer explanation are not consistent with preceding sentences4) Patterns of analogies as given by the explanation are not MAT acceptable: " less specific:more specific::more specific:less specific " where the direction of specificity is reversed in one case5) Simple graphs are drawn incorrectly or not to scale6) Understanding of subject matter appears to be superficial in many cases leading to more than one correct answerOn the last point, this particular text has far more questionable answers than any of the other MAT prep manuals. While this happens with all of the publishers, the frequency of questionable answers is a so high that it leaves the reader questioning the overall quality of the content.While Miller Analogies Test (MAT) with TestWare, 6th Edition has SOME good material, the volume of errors is too great. The book should be recalled and pulled from inventory. If the editors spent a few more weeks on proofreading and fact-checking, REA would have a usable product.
I purchased both the REA and Kaplan test prep books to help me get ready for my recent first attempt at the MAT. While the Kaplan book has great word banks, the practice tests on REA's TestWare package were almost exactly like the actual computer-based MAT. My score on the first REA practice test (which I took cold, no studying) predicted me to be somewhere around the 90th percentile. I scored in the 99th percentile on the actual MAT (overall test takers as well as in my major), and believe the REA practice tests contributed to that score increase.
i had no idea what to study for the MAT... this book was great, full of practice tests, best part is the explaintion part.The cd rom, didn't work with my MAC, but found an app for that. :)If you must take this crazy test, get this book and good luck.
Having just taken the MAT, I felt that the MAT text with Software prepared me well for the test. I was accustomed to the question format, applications in diverse areas such as philosophy, literature, and history- I'm a Math teacher so this was most difficult for me. Having taken all 8 practice tests in the text and additionally the 4 software based tests, I felt as prepared as I could of been studying with this text for the last four to five weeks. The unexpectedness that I encountered such as test questions that had not been included were more than I would have guessed, while given the current test will have new questions not seen in their entirety did not surprise me. Part of my challenge is I have been out of graduate school for 4 years now, it would have been less difficult have I taken this at that time of graduation- while I didn't know at that time why I would have to take the MAT as hindsight is 20-20. All in all was happy with the help I received, my score wasn't great but it exceeded what was required for admissions- so I am very happy. I would highly recommend this text, and the software was excellent as it emulated the actual computer driven test I had taken. As with any preparation, it is best if you complement it with additional vocabulary and test flashcards, as well with studying some of the topics you are most likely to do poorly with. The computer software is excellent with self-assessment, so as we may sometimes believe we can achieve a fairly good score without any preparation- just take the first software test and see how well you do, I know it certainly was an eye-opener for myself and motivated me to study further.
I have only started browsing the book so far but have noted a couple of errors and typos. For instance, on page 165, the book states that the Arctic Circle is at 66.5 degrees south and the Antarctic Circle is at 66.5 degrees north; however, the directions are backward. The Arctic Circle is north; the Antarctic, south. The book does seem helpful. I like the disc especially. I may update more later as I continue with the book and disc.
I was studying with this material, to find that the fundamental base of this book and its setup is wrong. The analogies are usually A:B::C:D. This book states that the completed side will always have the analogy (Therefore, A to B, and C to D). This is not the case, per the MAT official site, the analogies can be stated like previous, or A to C and B to D. The online practice tests makes this book enticing, but I would not say it was worth it due to the fundamental error. I do not know if it is only this version, but the book I bought was definitely wrong.
I had to take the MAT and was really worried as I do not like standardized testing. Not only did I hit the required score for my college I surpassed it by quite a bit! There were many things I liked about this book such as the important lists, explanation of analogies used, practice tests, and practice test answer explanations; but the CD was most helpful, offering a real feel of what the test scenario is like. I strongly recommend this study guide to anyone with test anxiety or those who are looking to get the maximum score. Simply put, this study guide is amazing!
