Culture Sketches: Case Studies In Anthropology

Ideal for any cultural anthropology course, this brief collection of ethnographic case studies exposes students to 15 different cultures. The groups selected are peoples whose traditional cultures are uniquely their own. Each has distinctive patterns and practices; each has faced the challenge of an encroaching world, with differing results. Moreover, they often provide the prime illustrations of important concepts in introductory anthropology course including Azande witchcraft, Ju/’hoansi egalitarianism, Trobriand kula exchange, and Minangkabau matriliny. As such, this volume can stand alone as an introduction to central ethnographic concepts through these 15 societies, or serve as a valuable companion to anthropology texts. Many of the peoples presented are involved in the diaspora; some struggle to preserve old ways in new places. All sketches follow a logical, consistent organization that makes it easy for students to understand major themes such as history, subsistence, sociopolitical organization, belief systems, marriage, kinship, and contemporary issues.

I rented the ebook version of this textbook for an anthropology class I recently had to take (Peoples of the World).I've only taken one other anthropology class previous to this one, but I actually really enjoyed reading this textbook for this class.I found the chapters to be organized really well, with a clean / minimal design that made referring to specific sections in chapters on assignments or exams very easy to do. Over the course of the semester we got through the whole book, and I realized this was one of the only times I had actually done all of the assigned readings since it was really interesting to read about all different cultures. This was definitely one of the more reasonably priced textbooks I've had to rent for a class; I only wish that buying the text wasn't so much more expensive since it's just an ebook.Regardless, if you're contemplating whether or not to actually purchase this for a class I would recommend doing so because this was an interesting read.

This is our textbook for a Cultural Anthropology class and I have sincerely enjoyed the class and the book! The book offers extremely interesting sketches of unique cultures who attempt to hold fast to their traditions and values as encroachment threatens to bring modernity and its myriad problems to bear. We have two more weeks of class and I am soooo sorry to have it end however, I will continue to refer to and re-read Culture Sketches.

Really good ethnography reader. It's light reading so it doesn't bombard you.with words you don't understand. It's a brief overview of a culture and it worked perfectly for my class. Great cultural anthropology textbook.

- Awesome book for comparisons/contrasts between cultures.- Easy to read, structure is set up nicely also.- Covers many popular and not-so-popular cultures.

While providing nice categorized details about various cultures, it's sloppy, includes a lot of pointless quotes and citations from out of date sources and blatantly incorrect information. Here's an example, in Chapter 4, it says "More than 400 million Haitians have received food aid"Haiti has a population of ~10,000,000. What were they thinking? "400 million? Yeah, that sounds right."

These case studies are insightful and full of information however I would really appreciate them more if they focused on the current cultural situations. Many mention what's currently happening but focus on the past this is not helpful if I plan a trip of meet someone from Sudan.

We purchased this textbook for my son's university class on Anthropology. This is exactly what he needed and purchasing or renting textbooks from saved us more than $300 this semester.

very very interesting. I love culture and this book was great for me because of that. m anthropology teacher uses it for class and its very interesting.
