The image of the primitive, dust-covered stagecoach pounding across the Plains is one of the enduring images of the Old West. Photogarpher/collector Sandor Demlinger offers up over 280 vintage photographs of the stagecoach and life in the West in STAGECOACH, RARE VIEWS OF THE OLD WEST 1849-1915.After a beginning chapter on westward emigrant routes, Demlinger records the beginnings and steady development of stagecoach service in chapters covering events from 1849-1860, 1861-1871, 1872-1881, etc. The text is both factual and lively with various first-person reminiscences that recall those times.Hundreds of well-reproduced, nicely-captioned images depict various types of stagecoaches, waystations, towns, individuals, crowd scenes, hangings, railroads, western vistas, etc. Most of the images are photographs but also included are maps, diagrams, advertisements and artwork.Obviously a labor of love, STAGECOACH should prove to be catnip to fans of the old West. Those bygone days really come to life in this tremendously appealing 2005 Schiffer Publishing release. Recommended.
This book has awsome pictures, and discriptions of many comanies who had stagecoaches. There were different kinds of stagecoaches, similar to different kinds of cars today. Some companies had "cadillac" type which were comfortable for riders while others had the basic "ford," which were uncomfortable. There are hundreds of facts, illustrations, explanations and resourses about the rides, ticket prices (Generally $1.00 a day), how much luggage was allowed, and even chapters about robberies and Indian attacks. An enjoyable read and well worth information for research.
Lots of terrific vintage photos of the Old West, but many of them are not stagecoach photos. That doesn't detract from the book, and Old West history buffs should enjoy the end product.
Wonderful pictures - lots of typos which didn't bother me. Worth the price if you like the nineteenth century USA.
