Khyentse Rinpoche inspired Matthieu Ricard to create this anthology by telling him that "when we come to appreciate the depth of the view of the eight great traditions [of Tibetan Buddhism] and also see that they all lead to the same goal without contradicting each other, we think, 'Only ignorance can lead us to adopt a sectarian view.'" Ricard has selected and translated some of the most profound and inspiring teachings from across these traditions. The selected teachings are taken from the sources of the traditions, including the Buddha himself, Nagarjuna, Guru Rinpoche, Atisha, Shantideva, and Asanga; from great masters of the past, including Thogme Zangpo, the Fifth Dalai Lama, Milarepa, Longchenpa, and Sakya Pandita; and from contemporary masters, including the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and Mingyur Rinpoche. Written with great insight and clarity; this book has been such a pleasure to read and study. Ricard's academic and western background makes his discussion of Buddhism much more accessible and meaningful for me.
If you are looking for something essential an out of time, but really useful. This is the best option.I appreciate the really wide spectrum of explanations about some Buddhism topics. That allow to readers to understand, the meaning of some sacred text an words that are inspired a few great spiritual masters, and encourage me to follow the path. Some times would like to have the possibility of place the words in ours context, but for that I think is better other works from the same author.
This is a very important anthology of Heart advice and general teachings of the great tibetan and some Indian masters. It is especially suitable for all those who are initiating the serious study and practice of Mahayana Buddhism, with a free , open and non-sectarian spirit.An important thing to know is these are not the kind of teachings that allows directly reveal the Buddhas Vision as you would have it in Dzogchen, Mahamudra or Prajnaparamita.
I very much appreciate these well chosen pithy essays that open the space to meditation and mindfulness in an intense and enlivening manner. If you read this book, you won't be sorry!
Understandable advice from the masters themselves...not somebody's interpretation...this book just moved to the top of my collection.
I have been listening to this as an audiobook from Audible.com for the past few days. I'm about half way through and am very impressed and inspired. I have not found many books in audio format sharing what I consider deep and true teachings of spirituality/enlightenment. This is one such book. The narrator does a good job too of capturing the feeling of what is being expounded. I highly recommend this book, especially in audiobook format for those of you who are too busy to slow down with a book in your hand. Love, Happiness and Goodness...
