The very best parts of this book are the first 20 pages that contain the Preface and the "How to Use This Book" sections - there, Weeks gives sincere and thoughtful reasons on why Americans should visit the nation's national and state battlefields and parks, and some good advice on how to plan visits, etc. The book is divided into several geographical sections, which is a good choice. The book is more inclusive than the Civil War Trust's guide to the "Civil War Discovery Trail" and other similar nationwide guides, but to call it "Complete" as the title does, goes a bit too far. One wonders if he did limit the book to only those sites he has personally visited (and at more than 500, that's very impressive), but a few examples will show where the books comes up short:Missouri - he does highlight several great sites, including the essential Wilson's Creek battlefield near Springfield, but also includes "Clark's Mill," with "no markers or memorials." He doesn't include the important site of the Centralia Massacre or the Springfield National Cemetery (I think it's important to visit national cemeteries associated with the war), or that Missouri has two good established Civil War trails - Gray Ghost and U. S. Grant - which will lead travelers to many interesting and relevant sites.Galveston (TX) - I was very pleased to see him list Galveston as must-see - I agree. But again he missed some important relevant sites on the island: the "Dignified Resignation" memorial and the wealth of Civil War personalities to be found at rest in the island's Broadway cemeteries.
