As a Forensic Psychologist I use this text and recommend it to clients to better understand and appreciate the psycho-developmental needs of their children. Of particular interest to most of those parents are the diverse tables which clarify the expected and unique behaviors of children by age group. This provides those parents with a guide book to assist them in child rearing through age 18. That reference material not only facilitates the parent's understanding of the needs of the child, but also better prepares more effective parenting skills and preparation for developmental issues which are significant in custody and visitation (or access) legal questions. Parents have reported developing a feeling of confidence since they are using scientific data in making parenting decisiions. Legal authorities -- judges and attorneys -- have felt more confident in their recommendations, opinions, and decisions which are based upon evidence. -- Swen Helge, Ph.D.
I bought this book for a class; psychology is something I dread and have a difficult time reading psych textbooks. This book, however, is easy to read. I like the stories at beginning of each chapter; it sets up what the author will be discussing throughout the chapter nicely.
The book is well written and very interesting. I don't mind reading it unlike other textbooks. Was a little nervous about it not getting it in the mail before my class started, but it did get shipped and delivered right on time.
Purchased as a text book for my daughter in college. She stated that she an immense amount about child development. Furthermore, the research provided in this book is up to date and very well structured. She has held onto this book for use in post-college professional career.
I am SO glad I got this book. I'm in graduate school and it just so happened that we are using this book! Berk's style of writing makes it easy to understand and it's an excellent resource if you are going into psychology and want to know all about from conception to high school children. Couldn't be happier with the purchase, and even though its an older edition; it's still current enough for me to use in class.
I have used this book for other college classes, it is a bit dated now.I would like to see a newer version, as much of this is now been added to in some cases of theory, research, and reviews.
Hi, I love how the book divides the development of human beings by age, physical development, socio-emotional development, and cognitive development. I also love how the important words are highlighted.
This textbook contains extremely dense chapters that reference so many different views, and never really holds to a specific perspective. The reader is often left confused as to what to really take away from each chapter. It spends an abundance of time on infant development and very little time truly drawing any connection to something resembling Psychology, or something that will be useful to a Psychology major. It might be useful for someone planning to go into early childhood education, but Psychology in this content is truly lacking; and combined with the extremely long chapters that often flip-flop between other people's takes, you never really comprehend what you are supposed to truly gain from the chapter. By each chapter's end, you find yourself cheated of time and no more knowledgeable then when you began. I'm still not sure what concepts and perspectives I was supposed to take away from this textbook, and I was looking forward to this course.
