J Ross Eshleman & Richard Bullcroft tenderly and appropriately dedicate this educational masterpiece on the family to their spouses, children and grandchildren. I can think of no better way to commence such an endeavor. In its eleventh edition, this book is not just for students but can be an excellent edition to any family library. It has rich sociological and psychological material covering such topics as the family as a social institution and its historical origins; and makes a smooth transition into contemporary issues affecting the family today. This book demonstrates the growing changes in the family system and provides a rich multicultural perspective on families that encompass the rich cultural traditions of the United States today. It covers such important issues as partnering and marriage formation giving ample easy to understand statistics and on rates of marriage and divorce worldwide and the factors affecting them.My favorite part of "The Family" is the chapter covering the dimensions and the consequences of homogamy and intermarriage and discusses the importance of religion and how it can play into the relationships of couples coming from divergent faiths and backgrounds. It discusses premarital and non-marital relationships and treats them democratically and undogmatically going into such important subtopics as the socio-cultural context of non-marital relationships, value theory, role theory, and exchange theory.I really liked the treatment and the respect that it gives to non-marital cohabitation and elucidates the reader with statistics that demarcate the incidence and prevalence of cohabitation among humans and the methodological concerns in the study thereof.
