The Future Of Batterer Programs: Reassessing Evidence-Based Practice (Northeastern Series On Gender, Crime, And Law)

Batterer programs are at a critical juncture, with a handful of experimental program evaluations showing little or no effect from the prevailing program approach. This finding has prompted calls to overhaul or replace such programs. Edward W. Gondolf examines batterer research in light of the push for “evidence-based practice” and advocates a progressive evolution of batterer intervention as it currently stands. Cautioning against the call for programs based on a “new psychology,” he argues that current cognitive-behavioral approaches are appropriate for most cases, with the addition of ongoing risk management for severely violent men. Overall, he promotes a broader picture of batterer intervention and advocates better implementation of the basic principles established in the criminal justice field.

Dr. Gondolf reconsiders his own research in light of criticisms, and takes a careful look at research supporting the movement toward evidenced-based treatment for domestic violence. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, this is a great resource that gathers most of the previous work that has been done, gives you tools to use in evaluating, and offers arguments for a reasoned approach to treatment. Much of what he says just makes sense, and those in the field know too well that many argue for propositions that seem to have no relationship to the everyday work. Gondolf argues for involving front-line workers in research to bring reality back into the argument. Put together so it is an easy read regardless of your knowledge of statistics and researchers jargon. A must read for anyone in this field.

Very helpful summary of research regarding batterers intervention programs. I have bought several copies and recommended this book to other BIP providers and criminal justice officials.

This book is critical work of research for anyone doing treatment with domestic violence. Excellent quality and value of product.

An excellent book and finely researched! The book challenges thought and reflection for proactive programs. A must for read for those who work with domestic violence offenders.
