Classic Readings In Urban Planning

This new edition of "the best anthology in planning" includes 33 selections by many of the profession's most respected thinkers and eloquent writers. Returning editor Jay M. Stein chose the articles—about half of them new to this edition—based on suggestions from colleagues and students who used the first edition, recommendations from planning scholars, awards for writing in the field of planning, and his own review of recent planning literature. Classic Readings in Urban Planning offers an unparalleled depth of coverage and range of perspectives on traditional aspects of planning as well as on important contemporary issues. Classic Readings in Urban Planning is an exceptional main or supplementary textbook for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level students in urban and regional planning. As a general overview of the field of urban planning, it is also an excellent choice for planning commissioners, practicing planners, and professionals in related fields such as environmental and land use law, architecture, and government. An abstract introduces each reading, and each section includes suggestions for additional readings suitable for more extensive study. Many of these are also "classics" that could not be included as a main selection. Like the acclaimed first edition, this collection of essential readings is sure to excite, inform and, especially, inspire a new generation of planning students and practitioners.

This is one of the best reference "anthologies" available for the planning discipline. It combines classic readings - the foundations - and is written for upper level undergraduate and graduate students. Beyond its excellent use as a textbook for classes, it is also a valuable reference reader for practitioners and researchers alike. I have assigned this book several times to my students for classes and have found it to be quite beneficial, and students learn both foundational information as well as exploring current discourse in urban and regional planning. I rate this as one of the best planning books available, from an reputable publisher and carefully selected chapters to provide the range and depth of readings needed to explore the profession and discipline.

This is a perfect book for anyone preparing to take the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) exam.I used many books and documents to prepare for the exam, but found this book to be the most helpful. It covers all the greats in planning - from Jane Jacobs to Norm Krumholz - with abstracts for each selection and recommendations for additional readings following each of the book's sections. In addition to being a great study guide, the book will be a wonderful addition to your planning library. Great value for the price!

This book is very difficult to read due to the horrible editing. There is at least one typo per page, and often much more. Sometimes these typos are simply a space in the middle of a word like "t he." More often, it involves a word randomly added where it shouldn't be or a mispelled word like "toto" instead of what I am assuming is supposed to be total. These typos are extremely distracting and often affect the meaning of the text. I often need to pause and read the context to determine what a sentence was supposed to say because it was not properly edited. My professor warned the class that this book was written poorly but we had no idea!My recommendation is that if you need it for a class then you need it and best of luck to you, but if you are looking at it for your own personal reading, look elsewhere.
