This workbook has lots of pages that are appropriate for "Grade K."However, it's not a "Comprehensive Curriculum"If it were just a workbook, I would have given it a better score but I think the title is misleading.It's not a curriculum at all and to label it comprehensive is completely false advertising.We do like it as a workbook.
I have used several of these books now since January. The 4 year old that used this book (previous edition, but I scanned through the updates at Sam's Club and there don't appear to be any big changes) has shown significant progress. She started without being able to write any letters or numbers and without being able to identify any written numbers. Within the last 5 months and fully completing this book, and some supplementary reading lessons she is able to recognize and write numbers 1-14 fluently as well as recognize most letters although she struggles with the sounds that many of them make. She grew bored of all the coloring in the book and started scribbling instead of coloring on some of the pages (which I allowed as long as she scribbled or circled only the ones starting with the correct letter).The one thing that is frustrating is that there aren't many reading lessons built into the workbook. However the last few pages assumes that the child can read. In addition, the first grade book goes to fast with the assumption of reading for the beginning reader. There needs to be a smoother bridge for this series. Also the first grade book (both this addition and the previous edition) have some sheets which have confused both children with the subtraction problems as they draw out objects for the numbers on both side of the subtraction sign. Those should really be revamped (for the one that already new subtraction I told her to ignore the pictures and just look at the problems and for the one just learning subtraction I crossed out all of the second set of pictures and had her cross out the number of pictures that we were subtracting using the numbers in the problem).For the struggling first grader in first grade the first grade book worksheets are either too easy or really hard. The first grade book doesn't have enough word problems (she does word problems that include multiplication and division at school and this doesn't stand up to it). However, lessons like the clock lessons made her have a great day while other students in her class were struggling with it. She (and her grandmother when she visited) really struggled with parts of it like the synonym unit and which one doesn't belong because they aren't always straight-forward for somepeople -- like what is a synonym for "dimes"? Coins, change, money, currency...how do you teach how to come upwith stuff like that to someone else? Or that you can list a type of store for a synonym to it (not 100% true, but what the book expects).Once you get past the super-fast reading primer the first grade book looks similar to the second grade book (with more reading in a paragraph form for the second grade book).
Mostly I write about children's books but today we are taking a little detour. My daughter is in Kindergarten and loves it! But she is always looking for more worksheets to practice her math with. The Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills Grade K is perfect for this! There is over 400 pages of worksheets for your child to discover.Each worksheet is similar to what she has been working on in school. There are pages asking her to fill in the missing letter in a simple word, connect the dots to make a picture, several pages with various directions for her to follow like circle the item that is full. The book is separated into sections. There are four sections in the book; Mathematics Readiness, Numbers and Counting, Time and Money and Patterns, Graphing and Thinking Skills. There is even an answer key, though this is Kindergarten work so I'm sure you'll be fine without it.There's even a developmental skills checklist so you can assess your child's needs at the beginning before starting the book. And then once you've completed the book you can look back and see how far they have come. I like to use this book with my daughter at home to help keep her skills sharp. This would be perfect to use over those long breaks we have coming up or over the summer to keep your child's skills sharp.
Fairly good curriculum if you're needing something cheap to get buy. Certainly there's better out there, but this will do okay in a pinch or if you need a supplement. If one intended to use this as their only curriculum some extra curricular reading and worksheets would be beneficial.
Love these books. I've used them as our homeschooling curriculum for 3 years now with our son and I now ordered the Kindergarten book for our daughter. They include everything I want them to learn and practice. Happy with my purchase.
I got this book for my Grandson who turned 5 too late to attend school. It is a great book for beginners, but I had to go to the 1st grade book because he is past this level. Like the look of the first grade and hope it is as compact as this book is.
Excellent addition to my kindergarteners curriculum. The exercises are engaging as well as helpful to fine motor skill development, phonemic awareness and mastery of all those skills required for a pre-reader.
I bought it to start my adoptive children in the routine of doing school while in country and to start working a little on their English vocabulary skills. My ASD son worked on the first grade book and liked it very much, we purchased the second grade book to take with us in the trip to keep up with school work. It is not a full curriculum but covers the all the bases and makes for a good practice resource. It is a thick book but easier to take than all the homeschool resources we use.
