As a clinician who has worked in the trenches for more than 24 years (mostly with CD/cod and other addictive disorders) I like to review material related to staying sober, addiction, relapse prevention and new ways to think about supporting people to get and stay sober.This book never fails as a review of past and recent literature, and it becomes apparent quickly that the authors know their stuff.Highly recommended - five stars...
I found this book to be a great tool for my studies in addiction counseling. The book breaks down the subject matter into very definitive chapters. In addition to addressing chemical dependency addictions, also covered are process addictions such as food releated process addiction, gambling, sex addiction, shopping addiction, etc. Another topic covered is co-occuring addictions aka dual diagnosis issues. I readily suggest obtaining this book, whatever your level of addiction schooling or active counseling.
At first I did not like the format of this book, as everything seems to run together (no bolded key words, no pictures ; ), so I was not grasping the information as well. This is more user error (me), because as I began to take bullet point notes of key info as I read, I was able to remember the information presented and found it more interesting and practical. I like that this book is actually quite thorough and that it is up on current research as to what is effective for treating addictions.
This was an outstanding book, well researched, easy to read from cover to cover. If you wanted a learn and have a clear foundation on the topic of Addiction Counseling, I highly recommend that you read this book. Great book for college students
This book was a requirement for my Substance Abuse class this semester, and has proved to be very helpful in my quest to educate myself about substance abuse. The book is detailed without being boring.

I am a student in grad school going for my Master's in Counseling, and although I don't really get into the topic of substance abuse this book was an interesting read for a decent price. I kept it, it will be a great reference someday. I recommend it!
