This is a great and valuable book. It teaches Reading and History. The History stories are not to short and not to long. They are also interesting and can keep my child's attention thru the entire story and this is no easy feat. After each lesson are questions that help them build their test taking skills and I like that they are multiple choice and a reasonable amount but not so many as to frustrate them. I liked this so much that I also bought the Science one from this company...I would highly recommend this book!!! I have included pictures of a couple random lessons...
My daughter has learning disabilities and comprehension is one area we struggle in. I homeschool and have many books for teaching any one concept so that I can reinforce the information learned and not just put information out there just because its a requirement. The layout of this book is great. Vocabulary words that will be referenced in the following story are taught and cover learning the words, but also teaches that one word can have a variety of meanings. The practice of teaching the vocabulary words also helps with fluency in reading and that increases comprehension. The stories told are interesting and informative. The quizzes help to reinforce what was read and delve a little deeper in the meaning of the story and not just the facts. I found this book to be well thought out and my daughters favorite way of learning Social Studies/History.
I am homeschool mom and purchased these for my daughters 3rd grade year. We have previously been using abeka which I am still a huge fan of. However, I wanted something that provided a little more knowledge for my daughter in other areas than English and Math. I think these books are great.
If there were one of these for every subject, I'd buy them all! My daughter loves the stories and the quiz. It holds her attention, gets the point across, and allows her to learn by making it more interesting. By far THE BEST social studies curriculum we've found for 3rd grade. I wish there were a spelling version. We will be buying the other subjects!!
Quick and comprehensive review for standardized reading tests. Only 5 questions on each selection, but the student has to be thoughtful in selecting answers, so if s/he hasn't done the reading, it's evident. Selections are interesting snippets that add to the student's social and historical awareness.
I love how the book is set up. Since I homeschool, I also like the examples of different ways to implement usages of the listed words. I use a separate book and have him look up definitions, ABC order or use the words for a spelling test. The book is a great teaching tool for new teachers and parents homeschooling their children. I will look for more subjects.
Very helpful for parents and teachers to use with kids who need practice with reading and comprehension. Some of these storiespassages were very interesting and others moderately so. But, it is helpful if you have a reluctant reader and need some practice (I used them at home to make sure my daughter didn't experience the "summer slide" before beginning the new school year.
Excellent stuff. This really has help my child on her test! She failed her first reading test and was told she would failed if she didn't pass on the second try. I made her do several stories out of this book until she got all right answers on the stories. She went to school and passed her test! and was allow to pass to next grade. Would buy again!Thank you
