The latest edition in the long running originally written by the late Richard Marius enters its ninth edition since prior to 1989. Melvin Page had been updating the book for a long time and keeps it up to date with the expanding usage of technology in academic fields. Marius was a writer at Harvard and worked with its Expository Writing Program as the director. That is where he wrote this book as well as A Writer’s Companion in order to help undergraduate students adjust from secondary school writing to college and academic writing levels. This particular book is written to help history students as the discipline is one in which writing is the primary means of transmitting information. This is a good resource for students who plan to study history. It covers sources, historical analysis, and how to develop information so that the student can create their written interpretation of what is being studied. The appendix contains a sample writing paper, how to write reviews and short essays, and lists some additional student references. Electronic sources are covered in the main body of the book. When used in conjunction with Rampolla’s Pocket Guide or Turabian’s Manual for Writers (preferably both), the combination makes for a potent learning tool. I’ve used the information in this book myself and have even borrowed from it in teaching history students how to write. The transition from high school work to college level work varies from student to student in its difficulty, but guides like this book definitely help to make the transition easier. I find the book helps students learn academic writing while freeing instructors so they can teach history.
