I read about this book in a homeschooling magazine and decided to buy it because we needed more stories to read aloud that had definite morals to them. We have read the first chapter and my son, age 8, is hooked already. He enjoyed reading Encyclopedia Brown last fall and this book is similar in format in that you have a complete mystery and resolution in each chapter. However each mystery comes with a Bible verse to help you solve it. My son sat with his Bible open on his lap while I read the story and he looked up the verse and then tried to figure out the solution. I'm thankful for any book that can get my kids interested in reading AND give them oppotunity to become more familiar with their Bibles!
We took this book to our grandchildren in California, and just put it on the table for them. That night we discovered the 11 year old girl sitting on the bunk bed reading to her 8 year old brother. No pressure from us. They had solved the first 4 mysteries, using both simple deduction and by applying the biblical cues.
I have had this book for years, since it first came out. I finally sat down and read it last week and finished the whole thing in one night! I loved it! I will be getting the other two for me, then passing them down to my kids as they get older, and buying them as gifts. Kept me guessing, great writing style, I just really liked this book and would reccomend it to anyone who likes mysteries, like the Hardy Boys or 3 Investigators.
I will buy anything that encourages my children to read their Bibles. I ordered the first book in this series and after receiving it and seeing the effects, I have since ordered the other four books I found in the series. I read the first one to my daughters 8 & 9 as a test and once I got to the part where they needed to look up the Scripture, they both peeled out running through the house looking for a Bible. Since then, they always have them ready before I begin. I also have a 14, 15 and 16 year old that will stop what they are doing and join in with various degrees of participation. My children do not have TV or video game access outside of Christian themed movies and basic computer games though. I wouldn't say that these books have encouraged them to read their Bibles more, other than the Scriptures needed for clues, but that alone is well worth the price and they are fun even for me to read. The older kids almost take it as a challenge to solve the case without knowing the Verse and some you almost can, but you're never really sure without it and the solution at the end of the book on a separate page. The closest thing I can relate these too are Minute Mysteries with a Scripture clue twist.
My kids absolutely love this book!!!!! It is filled with short mysteries that they have to help solve by looking up passages in the Bible, which is the clue to solve the mystery. My children are 7 and 10 and beg to read "just one more". So far there has only been 1 story where they just didn't get it, but with a little super sleuthing they were able to figure it out. We homeschool so this book is a great way to get in our reading and Bible requirements at the same time. As a mom I am SUPER happy with this purchase. We will absolutely be ordering the rest of the books in the series!!!!!!!
This book introduces readers to a new way of reading a book. The author creates a story but leaves the reader to solve the mystery. The chapters are short enough so younger kids won't get bored with the story, but long enough to keep you wondering how each mystery will be solved. A new and fresh idea for young readers who want to use the Bible as their everyday sword.
My three boys cannot get enough of these. They also love Encyclopedia Brown. This is a great Encyclopedia Brown alternative or addition to your Encyclopedia Brown collection. We enjoy reading these out loud as a family. Fun to guess and discuss it together before finding out the answers.
Genius idea, fun, easy to read. We enjoyed this first book. Looking forward to reading the next books. I inadvertently gave a review for #3 which I have not read yet. It should have been for #1.
