I bought this book to use with my AP English Language class since CollegeBoard makes multiple choice questions such a scarce commodity, and I thought I had hit the jackpot...until I discovered that 's "Look Inside" feature shows the answer key for the entire book! I wouldn't recommend against purchasing the book, but you'll want to be extremely vigilant if you use any of these passages for a formal assessment, since a quick search on most cell phones will pull up all of the answers.
The passages cover several different topics and time periods. If you check against the lists of passages/authors that have been included in the AP Language Exams in the past, you'll find the selection is quite representative of what has previously been tested. I especially like the length of the passages. Many other exam prep books use very lengthy passages. These are just the right length to use for frequent practice in class and still have time for other class activities.
These area actually much much harder than the ones on the exam but because they were so much more difficult that when I took the exam I thought the questions on the exam were so much more simpler and easier.I passed the exam and I think this book (plus my teacher) really prepared me. But it's always best to take an extra step for prep and this book is definitely helpful. But like it says it's 500 questions. Just questions. It doesn't have prep, tips or essay questions. Just questions to answer like a never multiple choice test.
The questions on here are wayyyyy too specific for the AP Language and Composition test. Although the passages are nice and really good to read and get used to, many of the questions were not representative of how the actual AP Test was.
This book needs a new edition. It does not represent fully the types of questions that the AP test asks anymore. They've done away with most questions about literary terms, identifying grammatical structures, etc. This book would be better if the questions were updated to reflect the types of questions the exam has been using for the last 5 years.
I did about 130 out of the 500 questions in this book in preparation for the AP Lang exam and got a 5. I don't know how much I can owe to this book because I thought the Princeton Review was far more useful. Generally these questions were a lot harder than the questions on the actual AP exam, which is good because it makes you more at ease during the actual exam. Also, there are very thorough explanations in the back of the book so that is useful as well. Using this alone probably won't land you a 5 but it's worth a shot.
My AP Composition teacher made everyone in class buy one of these, and we worked on it pretty much all year. We went over about 400 questions out of these book very thoroughly and spent many many class hours on this book. However, as I was actually taking the real AP test, I found that the questions were ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like the ones in this book! This made me very mad because I felt like all those hours I spent on this was a total WASTE OF TIME, which I could have spent doing much more productive things.None of the vocabularies I got from this book were on the test, and the style of the questions are just not the same.Plus, this book has bad explanations for why an anwer is an answer for that question. I felt like it never really explained so that I know why i'm right or wrong. This book ended up just confusing me more and made me very angry by the time I was walking out of the testing room.About 20 students from my class ran to the teacher after the test to tell him that this book is just horrible. This is so terrible....I believe this book was one of the worst prep book I ever came across, and believe me, I have seen A LOT of prep books.Ugh, I still feel grumpy whenever I think about this book.I hope my teacher doesn't make the kids next year do this in the class.
This is an excellent book to help students prepare for the AP Language exam. I like the divisions of chapters, as well as how to attack the prompt in the FRQs. It's worthy of a look as a teacher to help navigate through this challenging course.
