I have read this book aloud, in English and Spanish, to students grade 3-5 and they were all MESMERIZED by it. The reason is that they had never heard a book written in a child's voice, about everyday experiences similar to their own. The part about one of the girls being tempted to kiss the bum for a dollar got a great discussion going, with many students giving their opinion about what the girl should or should not do. Also, Elena Poniatowska did an amazing job of translating from English to Spanish. Nothing was lost, not even the voice. Poniatowska is an author in her own right, and therefore was able to achieve a perfect translation.

I originally read this book because I had to- in Spanish class, I had to prove my literacy. But after I read it once and got a spectacular grade on it, I read it again and noticed that there's a good message for those who haven't come from the most highly favored backgrounds in the neighborhood. It's written from a child's perspective and gave me a new outlook on what my own father must have gone through when he made the move from his country to the US. Props to Sandra in both languages.

I'm reviewing this as an English speaker who approached this work as a chance to test my Spanish skills.Frankly, I found the book delightfully interesting. The translation was, for the most part, easily readable, and the stories themselves were very memorable. I am confident that I missed much of context, and intend to read the work in English soon, but the translation wasn't especially complex.

The book, House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is an interesting book. I really do not understand why on some of the critiques people say they did not understand the book. I think it is very meaningful book. If you pay attention to it, there are many messages that Sandra Cisneros wrote on her book. I like this book very much because there are some stories that relate to my life, and I understand the concept of what she is talking about on her book. If there is, one thing that I did not like was that the book has many characters that I have to keep up.

I recommend reading this book in English. Because the author uses some Spanish or Spanglish in the original version, the Spanish translation is hard to understand at times.

I felt like I was in the book with her as one of her friends. She was so descriptive and spoke from real life. The way she described the trees in front of her house left me speachless and in complete aw of her talent. I was very emotional while reading the whole book because I could relate so much with the characters in the book. It was a fenominal book.
