What is not mentioned anywhere in the study guide, and I suppose Delmar ( the publisher ) leaves it up to logic or common sense, that, in addition to this study guide, one needs to go to the ASE web site and download their 24 page Composite Vehicle Type 3 Reference Booklet due to the fact about 20 percent of the questions in this study guide are directly related to the information listed in this ASE material.The 5th Edition questions do correspond to the current ( 2012 ) ASE Type 3 Reference Booklet, however, this begs the question as to whether or not earlier editions of this study guide are valid? Personally, I don't think they are considering the technological changes made over the last decade or so. It is doubtful the composite vehicle questions of the earlier editions match up to the Type 3 booklet. What one is left with is the choice of purchasing the latest edition of the study guide in order to gain the most current valid information.With this being said, this 5th Edition study guide is comprehensive in the range and complexity of the systems it covers, yet, before one dives into this guide, they must read and get-to-know the composite vehicle if one wants to test their diagnostic skills.I've taken the ASE CBT ( computer based testing ) recently, and although I feel the Delmar series of study guides are the best bang for the buck that is out there, it seems to me that even the latest editions questions are lagging a bit behind the testing format questions currently in use by ASE. I believe a study guide should be on par with the format of a test one is to take and it seems Delmar, if I can use this analogy, is still running electronically controlled carbureted engines in a multi-port fuel injection engine world.
