As mentioned in the other fine reviews above, there are tons of resources out there, and if you (or your child) is truly interested in attending USMA, you should read/view those resources if you want to know how the process works and, most importantly, to ensure that the candidate knows what they are about to commit to. Rent or buy the outstanding "Surviving West Point" DVD.....search here on for the many other highly-rated books and DVDs that provide inside stories and biographical and historical views of the WP experience... look at various impartial on-line forums and portals like serviceacademyforums.com and others.. and obviously, visit the USMA website itself for a huge amount of useful information. But, all of that aside, if you decide to get only one book, MAKE IT THIS ONE ! It contains practical, pragmatic, nuts & bolts information, economically compiled (no puff, just the facts) and easily read and re-read for reference throughhout the almost two-year process that a candidate must follow toward appointment. It was indispensable to our son at the outset, giving him a terrific overview of the whole process -- he read it cover to cover in two days -- in fact so did I since as his father I knew I had to also know the score -- and becoming dog-eared as he carried it around in his school backpack, digging it out to refer to as he began discussions with his guidance counselors and coaches and others who would support him through the application process. Out of the dozen or so other books and references/DVDs that we picked up over the past year or two, this one was the first one, and still ranks as the best. Now, I am not saying that owning and reading this book is a guarantee of making it through the process successfully. But what I CAN tell you is that our son stands here in the middle of his senior year of high school, having gone through the application process, attended SLS, completed his CFA (fitness) and DoDMERB (medical) cycles successfully. He received a Letter of Assurance (LOA), and was notifed this week that he has received a Congressional nomination to USMA. Barring any changes in status, our son will be appointed as a cadet in the West Point class of 2016, and I can safely say that this book started it all for him.

The book is beneficial to the cadet candidate and the admissions field force members. It does not, however, take the place of guidance from local West Point admissions field force members who tailor their guidance to the individual candidate. It is best used in conjunction with the admissions people as a tool to generate questions and provide a track to run on while negotiating the admissions process. There is a section on dealing with senatorial/congressional nomination staff people. In that section, it encourages quite a bit of communication with the staff, it should be noted that some of the staff members may welcome courteous communication while others may consider it burdensome if carried too far. While a thank you note is always in good taste for a staff member's help with the nomination process, common sense should prevail.

As a recent West Point grad, I directly used this book in my preparation to get accepted and thrive at the Academy. I'm glad it's continuously updated as West Point evolves in its standards and the way it does things. A absolute must-read for any serious candidate applying. Heed it's advice like a religious text and you drastically improve your chances of acceptance and starting a very promising career.

A startling review of just how extremely difficult it is to get into West Point. I bought it for my son but read it first, then gave it to him. If your child has aspirations of attending this academy then this is the book they need to read. It will separate those with genuine aspirations from those with wishful thoughts.

I purchased this book about a year ago when my son was considering USMA. It was useful to me and my wife as we helped our son with his decision. There were other books that we purchased as well and I would put this on my list of recommended resources for students considering USMA and for their parents. No matter what you read, you don't know what it's like until you get there and experience it - both for Cadets and their parents. That said, I recommend that you read everything you can. I also recommend the "Surviving West Point" DVD series from National Geographic.

I bought this book for my granddaughter who is applying to West Point. She found it very helpful in her decision making.

My son will be a firstie, if he completes CBT this summer. This book will help him through. He said he only wished he had it sooner

Great for students looking to go to the Academy!
