Becoming An Officer Of Marines: The Definitive Guide To Marine Corps Officer Candidate School

There is one undeniable fact about Marine OCS: your level of preparation prior to shipping is directly proportional to your chances of success while there. The key however, is you need to know what you are preparing for first. That's where this book comes in. This book is a collection of everything you need to know before shipping for OCS, both official and unofficial. If you've already done research and studied up, some of this book will be familiar and serve as a good reminder of the technical aspects. However, there is a missing link in your preparations. You've likely had that feeling that "I wish I knew more of what to expect" or "I feel like there is something I should know, but no one is telling me". You are not alone in that. Along with the technical information, this book also is a collection of stories, tips, advice, and important information from former OCS candidates. In the words of one contributor: "This book is all the crap I wish I had known before I went". We'll run you through the gauntlet to help you prepare. This book is just a tool though, you have to utilize it properly to get the results you want. We'll cover: - Leadership & Academics - Physical Fitness, including pre-ship training - Do's and Don'ts of OCS - Marine Corps rank structure and insignias - Sample schedule of OCS - Stories, tips, and more from former candidates

Having already been through OCS, I got this book just out of curiosity. I'm glad I did, I found myself laughing pretty hard a few times, it was fun to revisit some of those old memories, though at the time I didn't think it was all that fun. Like the description says, this really is all the s*** I wish someone had told me. Marine OCS is a huge culture shock, no matter how much you prepare or know, it'll catch you off guard one way or another....that's the point and they've got a lot of practice. The fewer surprises you have though, the better it'll be. Overall, the book seemed to cover all the bases pretty well, though I'd recommend in-depth review of all the required knowledge you should get from your OSO or other official channels. That should go without saying of course. The real reason this book gets a 5 star from me is all the extra stuff. The leadership traits and whatnot, you can find anywhere. The real-life stories and tips and stuff, not everyone is willing to give up that info. The writing style is great, it's entertaining to read, even in the technical/boring stuff. Basically, if you are going to OCS, this should be #1 on your (non-sanctioned, unofficial) reading list.

I went through OCS then TBS almost sixty years ago. In 2003 I wrote "One of Us; Officers of Marines - their training, traditions and values". I wish I had had the benefit of a book like "Becoming an Officer of Marines". If anyone is contemplating Marine OCS, they would be foolish NOT to read this book. It's the best preparatory reading on the subject available today. And it's a great read for any old Marine, too.

As I wrap up my career as Marine the more I realizes as things change the more they remain the same. I wish this book existed prior to me stepping off the bus at Brown Field in 1992. I thought I knew what to expect after having gone through MCRD San Diego several years prior. But OCS is not boot and just because you are already a Marine does not mean you will have a cake walk at OCS.

Excellent book both for incoming candidates as well as family members and friends who want to understand the process and maximize the effectiveness of their support for their loved one.

This book is an excellent view into USMC OCS and the entire process in gaining a commission. It is balanced because the authors have their own personal experiences to speak from.

Changed a lot since I went through almost 50 years ago. Yet it did not change at it's core. Most info would have been helpful.

really good read and accurate depiction of what officer school really is like

Good information for potential Officers.
