Deconstructing The NYSTCE

This guide has been written and compiled by our instructor, who focuses on the NYSTCE exclusively. We have published it in a convenient size that is easy to carry. In this guide you will find simple strategies for each of the exams. It covers the Constructivist approach to education and how this works for the NYSTCE exams. This guide also includes strategies for writing the essay and examples of essays for the ATS-W, CST SWD, and the CST Multi-subject exams. Please note that understanding the Constructivist Approach to learning is the key to understanding ANY pedagogical test.  This is also a good study guide to use for the EAS.  Our updated version of the EAS will be available in September of 2016.

I stumbled on this book on and after reading the positive reviews, I decided to purchase it. I am in the re-certification process after graduating from college in 1991 and raising a family. I was very nervous about taking the exams after being out of school for so long. (The exams have changed so much since I took the NTE's in 1990!!!) This book has helped me tremendously. I scored a 263 on both the LAST and ATS on my first attempts and I will be taking the CST Multi-Subject in June. Thank you to everyone who helped make this book possible. You are helping so many people like me achieve dreams that were never thought possible.UPDATE: On June 8th, I took the CST Multi-Subject. I cannot tell you how right on the money this book was with so many topics. I struggle with social studies and I used this book to learn the key concepts that the author mentioned. Sure enough, many of those concepts were mentioned on the exam (ie. Civil Rights, The Trail of Tears, and responsibilities of US citizens just to name a few). They asked about Picasso, Laura Ingalls Wilder as well as math concepts and music terms all which were mentioned in this simple review book. They were also correct with regards to the science section. It did contain alot of graph interpretations!!!! The glossaries were also invaluable in answering questions in the language arts section. Most importantly, this book has helped me write my essays on all of my exams with confidence. It was so reassuring knowing what was expected of me on the essays and I came to the exam prepared. I am confident that I did well on the Multi-subject and once again I cannot thank The Brooklyn Education Center enough for writing this extremely valuable book.

This book helped me understand how to answer multiple-choice questions and how to write essays for these exams. I am highly recommending this book. This book will give all students a new perspective to these tests. Also, students who follow the guidelines from this book will pass these exams easily. Good Luck!

Really was not helpful I was surprised when I saw the rating. The book was really brief it did teach you some tricks and tecniques but this book alone will not help you pass the exam its better reading a textbook.

Test was revised!!! The New York State Students with Disabilities Certification Exam was revised!!!!The information and practice exercises in this book is based on the old exam. The new exam format is completely different and much more difficult. For actual practice, see the NYSED site for study guides.

Thank you for taking the time to write a much needed and informative book! Not only does it take you step by step through the testing process, but it offers practical examples of essays, which will hopefully allow you to pass the NYSTCE!

I have used this book in addition to the Kaplan NYSTCE prep test book. I must say and not to take away from Kaplan, this book is dead on right. The essays are on point to what the real test is, the questions are also very very close to what you may see on the test. I past my state test the first time around and i felt that it was just too easy that i failed. But the grades i received was more that what i had expected on a first try and i have to write this review as i know this book will help anyone that want to pass the state exam with 250 or more. Thanks so much for this book. PS the NYSTCE is changing May 1 2014. Please be sure to get this book before and pass before the new change goes into effect.

In 2010 I barely passed the L.A.S.T. using the Kaplan book which was essentially useless and I avoided taking the ATS-W, SWD and CST-MULTI as I was finishing my masters. Because the L.A.S.T. was so difficult, I didn’t think I could pass the other tests using the Kaplan and the Barron’s, the second book I purchased, until I came across “Deconstructing The NYSTCE” by Bridgette Gubernatis. I thoroughly read the chapters over and over for the test I was studying for, followed all of her instructions and easily passed the ATS-W followed by the SWD. Knowing that I was going to have difficulty with the CST-MULTI as I did with the L.A.S.T., I attempted it anyway and did not pass. That is when I had my first contact with Bridgette who welcomed me to her class in New York City and said that she would help me pass this test. I have never met a teacher like Bridgette. She is so concerned about her students that she goes well beyond the norm to make sure that you will pass these tests. Bridgette is focused on the parts of the exam that account for a passing score and she will help you focus on these areas. This is what you learn in her class and it is reinforced in her book. If you have the availability and the means to attend her class, this is your ticket to NYS certification. Knowing what I know now about Bridgette and the importance of her class and book, I would have traveled from Buffalo to attend her class and paid any price for the book. Folks, she’s the “real deal”.

This book might not be the ideal guide to passing the ATS-W but it does inform the student of the keywords which should be focused on in the multiple choice questions and essay. I am glad I got this book. Bought it long time ago, and still used it recently. The old exam and revised exam are focused on the same idea and keywords.
