I bought this book along with the Barron's book and the combo of the 2 worked well I think (I ended up with a job where I wanted). The reason I gave this only 4 stars instead of 5 is that I took 3 tests and did not see any mechanical aptitude or math questions as advanced on the tests as some of those in the book. I spent a lot of time memorizing formula's that unless you were a mechanical engineer, I have know idea who would know this stuff off the top of their head (questions regarding force on a certain length lever over a certain distance or others related to force and distance regarding the pitch of a screw). Some of the math too seemed a little advanced for what I saw on the tests. I would suggest buying both books though, because it may give you a happy medium of which to study from. Better to have the info and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I've taken two entrance exams, used this book to study for both of them, and scored above a 90% on both exams. This book presents knowledge that is way above anything I've seen on the exam, which is awesome, because it sends you into the exam being ready to demolish the questions on the actual test. If you can complete the math sections in this book, then the ones on the test should be no problem for you. Also, there's detailed explanations for each answer. I had another exam book which was garbage; let's say you were working on math, for example, you'd go to the math section's answer key and there would just be a number. The Norman Hall book provides a step-by-step guide as to how they solved the math problem instead of just giving you the answer. This book may be a little more difficult than most exams in the USA, but I would rather prep hard on go into a test over-prepared than be under-prepared.edit: The book takes for granted that you have a somewhat decent understanding of algebra. the practice problems definitely helped me brush up, but I already was familiar with my basics, so if that's a tough spot for you, you should probably buy a math tutor book as well.

I took the State Firefighter test in Hawaii (Maui Airport). I used this book and the Barron's firefighter exam prep book. This book was a lot better for the mechanical aptitude and the mathematics portion of the test and the Barron's seemed to be better for the reading comprehension. The most helpful part of the books is really just the practice tests, because the test time goes by very quickly, so you want to be prepped and speedy at test taking when you get in to sit for the test. I got an 87 on the test (Decent, but I want to be mid-90's) but I think the time was more of an issue than being prepped for the material!! Definitely Recommend this book!!

Took the fire exam once (Hawaii) and passed with a 70% using other books. Nothing great. After this book, my scores shot up to mid 90's. Much harder than what you'll see on most tests, but the practice and activities that they have will definitely prepare you for whatever it is you come up against. I did put in about 2 months of studying using this book for about 30 minutes to an hour every few days. If you put in the time with this book you will see results. Would definitely recommend this book to someone looking to do well on a firefighter exam.

Not much help in Washington State. In WA most agencies have you test through one of two testing companies, Public Safety Testing or National Testing Network. Theses books are absolutely no help with these written tests. I have several of the Firefighter written test books and none help with tests from these two companies. Additionally, I recently was able to take a test offered by a fire agency itself, (not a third party testing company), and the book was no help there either. Not an entire waste of time since you'll be doing math problems and such, but you won't see remotely similar questions from these books on the written tests. The only commonality is that you will have to do math on all tests. Not sure which tests this would help with, but now I'm ready for them. If I only knew where they were....

This was a great prep book and gave me an idea of what to look for. I used this to prep for the Chicago Firefighters Exam, and because of this book I felt over prepared. I'm sure I'll refer back to this if I'm accepted to the academy. The CFD exam was incredibly simple compared to this, which is a shame, because I feel the content and skills in this book are good to know before getting into the field.

My son studied with this book and the Barron's and he felt very well prepared for the test. He studied for about 3 weeks before taking multiple practice tests. He got a 93 on the test and an interview. This strategy worked very well for him. He lives in Arizona and was trying out for the Mesa department.

First things first, it is a paper back book. From the outside it has good integrity and seems sturdy. I have seen a ton of great reviews and decided to try it out. It does have great information, and it is very easy to read and comprehend. It could be a little difficult to keep up with the book if you have zero fire experience. I have not finished the book quite yet. Although it is easy to read and provides good information, it isn’t as detailed as I like. I am looking to take my firefighter exam soon, and I don’t feel as if it prepares you adequately. I will have to leave another review after I take my test! I wish that the book had more pictures, as I am a visual learner.
