Rubin's introductory essays discuss the cultural and historical significance of each holiday and give context to the individual literary selections. The collection also includes biographical notes for all the authors represented.

This book is an excellent collection of poems, fiction, and chapters from the lives of both every day people as well as major historical figures, all of which illuminate the major Jewish holidays. The author weaves this rich variety of persepctives into a coherent reader through thoughtful introductory notes. Highly recommended.
