I purchased this book to introduce my kids to poetry and was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful selections that are included. Thirty-four poets are represented by at least two poems from each one, including a short synopsis on each poet's life. The collection includes Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, Walt Whitman's O Captain!, My Captain!, Ernest Lawrence Thayer's Casey at the Bat and Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken. I also liked being able to easily read the Large Print even though I'm not an old lady! I highly recommend!
I bought this as a gift for my mother, who has some problems with eyesight and needs larger print. Hard to find anything other than religious books (she likes those too, but a gal's gotta have some variety to spice her literary life up, darn it) with large print. I gave her a Kindle that she can enlarge the font on last Christmas, but she still likes the option of a paperback as well. She loves it!
I have ordered 20 books to distribute to recently arrived immigrants or American citizens who may have had to quit school for one reason another. The potry is correlated to our Amercsn history, some of which may seem ti be related to these people'sxperiemces. The large print mskesthe book less intimidating for the newer readers.
I really wanted to like this book. Really. I read another reviewer's comments about purchasing this book for ESL students, and because I had been trying to find a gift for a non-native English speaking friend who had recently obtained U.S. citizenship, I purchased this book. I found the layout to be ugly and inconsistent. There is no special spacing to delineate the poet bios from the poems themselves, so after a while (a very short while), it all runs together. For example, on page 69, the poet bio is at the top of the page but there are 3-4 unnecessary blank lines above the bio. On the very next page, there is also a poet bio at the top of the page, but no blank lines above the bio. Inconsistent. And ugly. On page 74, there is a poem called "Reuben Bright" and right below it is the bio of Stephen Crane. Why start an author bio at the bottom of a page? Weird. I realized if I gave the book to my friend (an intermediate ESL student), it would be really difficult for her to tell the difference between poem titles, which are in bold, and author bios, which also have the author's name in bold. No thought was given to layout or design in this book. For a book of poetry, layout matters.
classic poems. My 95 year old grandmother new them by heart. In her day they learned poetry in school. She read it cover to cover. Thank goodness they have some good books in large print. It is very hard to find them. I didn't even have to put my readers on to see the print. First time in years.
My mom liked this book of poetry very much. She is eighty-five years old and has written poetry for over fifty years.
This is a great book for your collection. The large print is great . I would recommend this book to everyone who loves poetry
What I really enjoyed about this book was the short bio on the authors who contributed. Nice variety of topics.
