I ordered this book for a graduate class that I was just about to begin. This book came in a timely manner and has been serving its purpose tremendously. It was in great shape and was exactly what I ordered!The types of information presented are very helpful to my overall knowledge about young adult literature. I enjoyed learning about how to select appropriate novels for adolescents; how to connect literature to students' lives; and exploring diverse book formats, such as graphic novels, to use in the classroom.This was great! Thank you!
This book was not bad at granting detailed insights into the theory of YAL. There were examples of literature that co-relates to the common core.Why I did not rate the book higher is because the theory lacked some techniques that I felt would have been presented and perhaps could have been through some workshop interaction. This component is left to the professor, but in my case my professor stacked theory (the text book) with field experiances and mass the course (by my opinion) inreasonable. My professor could have easily taught two masters level 3 credit classes (theory and practice) rather than the equivalent as one 3 credit course.While this looks more like a critique of my professor, it is a reflection of a text and curriculum that could be better planned. This is not to discredit the worth of the Bucher/Hinton book, more so to say that either needs to provide instructional guidance or that it needs to be inclusive of theory to safeguard its use in an academic setting. This is of course, my opinion. I do need to add that the field of YAL is changing often and recent editions with their revisions are obviously not performed with marketing solely in mind.
