The Yankee Chick's Survival Guide To Texas

In Texas "Yankee" is a loose term covering a lot of ground. If you're not a Texan or a southerner, you're a Yankee and therefore, to many Texans, suspect. There are many rites of passage to being a Yankee in Texas: the first time you spot a pickup with a gun rack; the first time you realize that a week is a long time to go without Mexican food; the first time you recognize a change in seasons; your first thunderstorm; your first honky-tonk.Culture Shock in Texas can be intense and is exacerbate by local rules of propriety that tell us to keep out mouths shut. But here in this book we are going to talk all about it with good old Yankee outspokenness. We'll clear the air, share experiences, orient newcomers, and have some good laughs.

This should be required reading for any Yankee Chick moving to Texas as well as any one who embraces the many cultural differences that make this country great. Ms. Dembling's insight and sharp wit had me laughing out loud many times and I don't even live in Texas or the South; I'm just a Yankee Chick living up North in Yankee land. Before reading this delightful book (which I read on a lark during a biz trip to Dallas) I had no interest in Texas, but now - hell, I think I'd like to plan a vacation there, perhaps find my self some good old boys to hang out with! Her pride in being a Yankee Chick and her love of Texas is evident throughout and it translates into a sincerity that makes this book so special. Hurry, buy this book!!!!

As a new Texan, and yes a Yankee Chick, I found this book extremely helpful. I understand my new adopted state a little better, but I understand how different I may appear to my new found friends due solely to this book. Thanks to my best friend up North for buying this book for me as a going away present. I read it on the way here on the plane, I could not put the book down. It is time again for me to read it... it's that good.

Sophia Dembling has captured the state in a way that delights this native Texan. I have always been empathetic toward anyone facing the daunting task of figuring out this odd little world. Sophia has us all figured out, the good and the bad, and yet she still seems to like us(and we, her). Those of you moving to or new to the state, buy the book...I can't imaging how it wouldn't help ease the pain. We are a little different, but we are generally kind people (bless our hearts.)If you've been here a while, or even are a native, buy the book anyway. And take a lesson from Sophia she's been more places in this state than most of us and has truly become a student of Texas and Texana. Couldn't we all learn from that?

The book was well-thought out and researched. It explained parts of Texas and attributes of Texans never explained publicly so well before. I recognized myself in it, I must confess. She needs to write "The Texan Guide to Yankeeland". Now that would be very useful to us 5 remaining Native Texans in the whole state.

Just when you think nothing more could be said about Texas ... along comes this very insightful -- and very entertaining -- book. I've lived in Texas for 30 of my 47 years, and I still feel at times that I'm in a foreign country, but no one has been able to put that feeling into words quite like Sophia Dembling. She translates, she interprets, she commiserates. This is the kind of book that usually turns out to be a clever concept that's thin on substance, but "Yankee Chicks" is as meaty as (dare I say?) a barbecue sandwich from Sonny Bryan's. It covers everything you need to know to live in this state -- the driving, the dress, the weather, the language, the cuisine, the characters, the larger-than-life culture. Dembling generously seasons her material with a droll wit; somehow she manages to have fun with the state without ever making fun of it. I highly recommend this to anyone (chicks or otherwise) who is planning to move to Texas or who has moved here, whether in recent months or in recent decades. I also wish every danged Texas native would read it just so they can get a real glimpse at how the rest of us view this state. I dare say they would be amazed. And shocked. And maybe even a little delighted.

I'm a Native Texan and found this book to be thoroughly delightful and pretty spot on. It's evident that much thought and research were put in. I'd not only recommend this book for newcomers to Texas, but also for Native Texans as well. Very accurate and entertaining!!

I was hoping for more insider tips to help someone moving to Texas. Instead it was mostly stories about her experiences. Not what I would call a "survival guide."

I read this book several years ago and saved it for a re-read. The second time I found it even more entertaining. I can't decide whether to pass it on to a Yankee friend or hold on to it to read a third time around. As a Texan (Dallas born and bred) I am familiar with most if not all the Texas references in this book. I came to realize that things that I assumed were normal behavior were a little strange to northerners and easterners. The observations in the book were not intended to ridicule or defend the Texas way, but rather to bring into focus our endearing lifestyle. Dembling offers her insight on her personal experiences as she seems to have enjoyed sampling a little bit (and sometimes a lot) of what Texas has to offer. Welcome, Sophia. We're glad to have you.
