O'Neil does a fantastic job of presenting the fundamental concepts of political science for the student new to the ideas and issues. Yes, many texts cover similar ground, but O'Neil does so both effectively and efficiently. And in the increasingly digital world, where many other information options are available, a concise crisp text allows students to get a foundation that allows them to more usefully read material in the various topics of interest to them.
This is a great, entry level, book for learning comparative politics. The author does a great job of explaining terms and systems in a way that anyone can understand, not just political science scholars.
Awesome text, great timeframe, great price and really good condition :) I don't mind small annotations or underlines, but this text had very few of either-- nothing but a plus. Overall I am so glad I thought to look online. Book buybacks are a joke! especially at 10-20% on a good day and there is always the nonsense of the school picking up a new edition the moment your term ends.
There is not enough relevant text in this 4th edition to warrant the extra money compared to buying the old 3rd edition. But if your professor requires the 2012 edition you can't really do much about it.The textbook itself is not particularly stellar. Most of the concepts are basic lessons in Political Science and have been rehashed over numberless textbooks. A sizable portion of each chapter is introducing you to what the author will be telling you and concludes by summarizing what he told you. I don't know the class level this book was aimed at but it certainly seems like it doesn't expect much from the reader in terms of academic aptitude. Instead of holding the reader's hand the author could spend more time on the actual topic.
It's so hard to review a book when you have to buy it for a class.It was a good book and easy to understand. It covered a wide amount of information.
Great read! A comprehensive, yet not overly detailed guide to most political phenomena.
