While AASHTO's Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, 4th Edition, is an improvement over the 3rd edition that was published in 1999, it's about 20 years behind in the research, particularly when it comes to bikeways in urban places. Notably, the AASHTO manual provides little or no positive guidance for separated bike facilities, but rather some cursory warnings about what not to do.Into the void left by AASHTO (The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), steps NACTO (the National Association of City Transportation Officials). Building from the latest research on innovative bike treatments from cities around the US, the NACTO manual provides cities with detailed guidance on the safest, high quality bikeways for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Unlike most transportation manuals, this one is clearly written and understandable to lay audiences. It explains the reasoning behind the design recommendations, and it is clear about where there is flexibility and where there is not. It is a required reference text for city planners, landscape architects, and transportation engineers.
Very useful and a must-have guide for architects, urban planners and urban designers.
