Voices Of Freedom: A Documentary History (Fourth Edition) (Vol. 2)

The best-selling companion reader to the Give Me Liberty! family of books. A rich collection of documentary voices addressing a central theme in American history―freedom. The documents in this collection show that although in some ways universal, the idea of freedom has never been a fixed, timeless concept with a single, unchanging definition. In fact, the history of the United States is in part a story of debates and struggles over freedom. Crises like the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the Cold War have permanently transformed the meaning of freedom. So too have demands by various groups of Americans for greater freedom. The primary-source selections in this book include presidential proclamations and letters by runaway slaves, famous court cases and obscure manifestos, prevailing ideas and dissenting ones. The voices range from Las Casas and Pontiac through Jefferson, Thoreau, Douglass, and Lincoln to Stanton, Sanger, Garvey, Luce, Byrd, and Obama. The Fourth Edition of Voices of Freedom includes new documents that better reflect the religious aspects of American history. It remains a comprehensive collection that offers a diverse gathering of authors and a wide breadth of opinion. Fully compiled and edited by Eric Foner, the collection includes headnotes and critical questions for each document. The book is organized as a companion to the textbook Give Me Liberty! An American History, Fourth Edition, by Eric Foner, and it can also be used with other texts in the American history survey and other courses.

The book is great... however, there is a missing chapter. When you get to chapter 25 the readings are not what is stated in the contents at the beginning of the book. This book is Volume 2 of a two book series. The readings go in chronological order. When you get to reading #169 (in chapter 25)Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from a Birmingham Jail the next reading is from reading #83 Hinton R. Helper (1857) instead of #170 The Sharon Statement (1960). This is messed up for the eight readings (170-177). These readings should have been in Volume 1, since this book starts at the year 1865 and goes to the year 2011. Pretty disappointing, since I needed a few of these readings for a research paper.

This was required reading for my American History class at college, but I have to say it was an easy to follow supplement to "Give Me Liberty!" by same author. I love to read but juggling two books for reading assignments for class has been a little tricky if you have to refer to this and Give Me Liberty! All in all, a very honest look at American History.

I bought this book for my college history class and for the price this is the best deal out there! I am sure of this because as a broke college student I try to find better deals but end up choosing this one because it was the best deal I could find.

This is a textbook for a class I'm taking, but it's one of the most interesting books I've read and it's a very easy read.

I need this book for my History class and it came in earlier than expected! Very nice and it has that new book smell.

Doesn't work on my tablet, called they had no answers. I was told I'd be called back.. NEVER HAPPENED

Foner has the tendency to stray away from the topic, otherwise very interesting and informative.

Bought book for American History class, it is easy enough to read and came if great condition.
