The selected readings provide a useful reference to classic public administration literature. The writings are presented in a general chronological order covering topics important to the various time periods. The book could be improved with an updated edition of current literature (stops around the Carter presidency.) An index would be helpful. Overall, a worthwhile addition to one's political science library. I refer to it often.
I purchased this textbook because it was a requirement for a class in my MPA program, and am happy to say it is a very informative book. It is full of essays from the foremost minds in the field of public administration and is set up in an easy to follow manner. It is broken out in chronological order based on different advancements in the field of public administration. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about public administration. As a professional working in the field, a lot of what I am reading is extremely applicable and can be implemented immediately. I also recommend purchasing from . As a student I received Prime for free and was able to get my textbook shipping for free. In addition, the price for this textbook was significantly less than anywhere else I researched. also had a nice deal where they gave $5 in free MP3 purchases for every textbook purchased, which is a nice little perk.
I recently completed my MPA few months ago (2012-2014) and I must say this is one book that'll provide everything you need to know in preparing yourself for a COMP Exam or graduation exam. It has all the crucial articles by its distinguished eras and useful excerpts in-between chapters and eras. If you're looking to minimize your spending on books while taking MPA, this should be on top of your list!
Just beginning my MPA journey with Capella University and this was the required textbook for one of my first two courses. Let me just say that prior to purchasing this text, I did not understand how a textbook could be rated as four and five stars. Now after having completed the course I completely understand. This textbook is a wealth of information and concepts relevant to all servants of public administration. Yes, the first couple of chapters assigned will not be in order, and hence, the text could be initially considered boring. However, allow me to reassure you that this was not the case. In a short period of time, I found that the text had so much great information that I wanted to use as much of it as possible for all the assignments. Even though I had purchased the e-edition, I went ahead and purchased this hard copy as well. You will learn a lot with this text. My only advice is to absorb as much of the information as possible and find a way to make it stick, and enjoy the text. Also, do not purchase the International Edition (my first mistake) because the chapters are in scrambled order and I found an entire chapter missing from it that was contained in the domestic edition. Best of luck on your journey!
